Purpose

Our mission is to restore, enhance and maintain ecological connectivity, ecosystem function and native biodiversity, while respecting sustainable human land uses, in the distinctive region of Ontario and New York State that lies between and embraces Algonquin and Adirondack Parks.

Long Term Goals

We envision an ecologically sustainable "home place" centred on the rugged landscape of the Frontenac Axis, a home place that provides for the well being of both its wild and its human inhabitants.

Natural areas in this region, whether privately or publicly maintained, provide effective ecological connectivity among existing protected areas from Algonquin Park in Ontario to Adirondack Park in New York. These ecological links, anchored by the two great parks, extend across highlands, valleys, rivers and political boundaires.

The essential movement of organisms, water, and nutrients throughout the landscape occurs seamlessly at local, regional and international scales. The traditions, scenic beauty and biological diversity of this unique region are maintained for their inherent value and for the life-support and enrichment of future generations.

In essence, ours is a vision shared by a society that recognises the importance of natural areas and is resolved to retain them

Objectives

The objectives of the association are:

  • To support, promote and initiate action to sustain a functional habitat of connected natural areas across highlands, valleys, rivers, wetlands and human barriers and boundaries that will enhance the survival and movement of healthy wildlife between the existing protection provided by Algonquin and Adirondack Parks.

  • To consult with, learn from, inform, and work with landowners, potential partners and the public in support of the above.

  • To conduct, support and recommend research and disseminate research results.

  • To advocate on behalf of and represent the interests of members with policy and decision-makers.

Principles

The principles of the association are:

  • The A2A Conservation Association seeks to bring awareness and understanding of the value of conservation to communities in our area of interest.

  • We will spend the time and effort to seek consensus and agreement, rather than accepting disagreement.

  • Our membership is open to all and is affordable to all citizens and landowners.

  • We prefer to seek agreement rather than to resort to voting.

  • Each member has equal rights within the organization.

  • We believe in respect for each other.

  • We are citizen and landowner led, with support from government and business.

  • We work through networks of existing community organizations wherever possible.
