Welcome!

Welcome to the Landowners’ Options Website, a service of the Algonquin to Adirondacks Conservation Association (A2A). We gratefully acknowledge the assistance of the Frontenac Arch Biosphere Reserve and funding from St. Lawrence Islands National Park.

This website is a collection of programs and resources that are available to assist landowners with practical ideas, technical advice, and in some cases funding, to enable them to manage their lands in ways that benefit nature and the people who live there. While the practical suggestions have wide applicability, agencies listed are Canadian.

Human health and well being are tied to clean water, clean air and healthy soils.  When we, as landowners, take steps to provide healthy habitat for wildlife on our land, we are contributing to all of these. Where natural heritage is maintained, a healthy environment leads to better lives for people economically, socially and even spiritually.

The A2A region stretches from and includes Algonquin Park in Ontario to Adirondack State Park in New York.  This unique area contains some of North America’s greatest biodiversity (number of different plants and animals).  Maintaining the area’s natural heritage means sustaining and connecting the wildlife habitat on which native animals and plants depend.

Protected areas in the region such as parks exist as islands in a fragmented landscape, which can result in extinctions. All species need connected landscapes to allow travel for food, shelter and to prevent in-breeding. The parks cannot, on their own, protect our natural heritage. Only the actions of private landowners can, because 60% of the land is privately held. The decisions we make about how we manage our land will determine the resiliency of natural systems in the region to withstand serious challenges such as global climate change, invasive species and inappropriate development.

A2A works in partnership with landowners, non-government organizations and government agencies to link habitat in ways that respect owners, benefit the land and contribute to economic and social well-being.  The mission of A2A is to sustain the unique natural heritage and rural character of the Frontenac Arch and the adjoining lands to the east and west.
